Great Britain put in a battling display against a strong Belgian team but came up short, handing Leon Smith his first defeat as Captain. After the first day both Dan Evans and Josh Goodall got off to good starts taking the opening sets, but the Belgians Rochus and Darcis proved too strong over the course of the match and came through both singles in 4 sets.

This left it up to Colin and Ross to keep the tie alive on the Saturday. The British pair faced Ruben Bemelmans and David Goffin, an upcoming young Belgian pair. After losing the first set Colin and Ross came back to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 .

The British pair, who are currently ranked 10th in the ATP Team Rankings, produced a spirited display and had to recover from a set down against their less experienced doubles opponents to win in a match lasting over three hours.

After the match Fleming spoke highly of the Belgian pair; “They were playing very well and we did not find our feet very quickly.”

Also speaking after the match, Captain Leon Smith praised Colin and Ross on their efforts; “They are brilliant to have on the team and they are the most fantastic guys to be around. As players they have so much more to come and this team will just grow and grow.”

On the Sunday the Belgians continued their dominance at singles winning the remaining singles to win the match 4-1.

Colin and Ross arrived early in Miami and got a solids week training in before the start of the Sony Ericsson Miami Open. This is only their second ATP1000 together. In the first round they have drawn Mardy Fish and Mark Knowles.

The British pair served well throughout the match winning 81% of points on their first serve, and saving all 4 break points they had against them. The first set the British pair managed to convert two break points, winning it comfortably 6-1. The second set was a tighter affair and there were no breaks. In the tie break Colin and Ross managed to string together some solid points to win in 7-5, sending them through to the 2nd round.

Colin and Ross then faced Paes and Stepanek in the 2nd round. In an interesting match involving a lot of break points their opponents Paes and Stepanek were able to convert more than the British pair. Colin and Ross faced 13 break points throughout the match and saved 9 of them, where as their opponents face 8 break points but were able to save 7 of them. The British pair went down 6-4 6-3 and will now head back to the UK to get ready for Davis Cup against Belgium, after a successful month in the USA.

After battling through their first round victory Colin and Ross faced the Belgian pair of Darcis and Rochus. The British pair produced a fine display cruising past the Belgians 6-2 6-1. This set up a semi final against Istomin and Elgin. This proved a much tighter affair with the British pair winning a tight first set on a tie break 7-4 and backing it up with a solid 2nd set 6-4.

In the final Colin and Ross met Michal Mertinak and Andre Sa. In a thrilling final the British pair were victorious 2-6, 7-6(5), 15-13 saving a match point to win their first title of the season. The British pair won nine fewer points than Mertinak and Sa, but kept pace with them in the Match Tie-break. They denied the Slovak/Brazilian duo a match point at 11-10, before clinching the final victory in just under two hours. “It was like an emotional rollercoaster really,” said Fleming. “We managed to come up with big points when we needed them today.”

Hutchins praised his partner for keeping them in the match at the critical junctures of the final two sets. “Colin always amazingly makes these shots and he keeps saying he’s lucky, but it’s not, and he did that again today.”

Fleming and Hutchins improved to 12-5 on the season and captured their second team title. They triumphed at the St. Petersburg Open last October.
